According to National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), several banks, financial institutions and others participated in the Lok Adalat which was organised nationwide and arrived at final settlements of over Rs 265 crore.
The release issued by NALSA said as per the data received till 5 pm, more than 56,000 cases, including pending and pre-litigation matters, have been settled.
The Lok Adalat was today organised under the patronage of Chief Justice of India H L Dattu and the leadership of Supreme Court Judge Justice T S Thakur throughout the country except in Assam and Uttar Pradesh.
The cases which were taken up ranged from bank recovery, cheques bounce cases, particularly under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
NALSA in its statement said the Lok Adalat "has greatly benefited the common man and it has been achieved not only because of the legal services authorities/committees but also because of the cooperation extended by the judges, lawyers and various authorities including banks and financial institutions".
Last year, the second National Lok Adalat saw the disposal of over 1.25 crore cases.
