The NCP has expelled its Malegaon corporator Nabi Ahmed Ahmadullah after he opted to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Dhule constituency against the nominee fielded by the ally Congress.
The action was taken on disciplinary grounds, the NCP said in a statement on Wednesday.
The Congress has fielded Kunal Patil from Dhule seat in north Maharashtra.
Ahmadullah is contesting election on a ticket from Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), being led by Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh leader Prakash Ambedkar and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi.
Malegaon is one of the six Assembly segments that falls in the Dhule Parliamentary constituency.
"Maharashtra NCP chief Jayant Patil has expelled Nabi Ahmed Ahmadullah for not following the party discipline," state NCP general secretary Shivajirao Garje said in the statement.
Garje said the NCP had asked Ahmadullah to not contest the election against the candidate of the grand alliance, yet he went ahead with filing his nomination.
Dhule goes to poll on April 29 in the fourth and final phase of elections in Maharashtra.
