NCP MP Supriya Sule today said her party would support creation of separate Vidarbha state by carving it out from Maharashtra if "local sentiment" is in the favour of such a move.
Sule said her party had supported the creation of Telangana, which was formed by splitting Andhra Pradesh.
"I don't think statehood is the only way for development of Vidarbha. If there is a local sentiment in favour of the statehood...Discussion on creation of Vidarbha would be necessary," she added.
Sule said if people of the region wanted a separate state, her party would support the move.
While Shiv Sena is against "breaking" of Maharashtra, the BJP is in the favour of creation of the separate Vidarbha state, comprising districts of east Maharashtra.
