Controversial UPA-era plans to set up anti-terror hub NCTC has been kept in abeyance due to the concerns raised by some states, Lok Sabha was informed today.
"Minister of State for Home Hansraj Gangram Ahir said the National Counter Terrorism Centre was mandated to draw up plans and coordinate action for counter terrorism with other stake holders including anti-terrorist organisations in states.
"However, operationalisation of NCTC has been kept in abeyance as some states had raised concerns regarding its structure, functions and mandate,"" he said replying a written question.
The idea of NCTC was conceived by the then Home Minister P Chidambaram after the Mumbai terror attack in 2008.
However, the then opposition Chief Ministers, including Gujarat's Narendra Modi, had opposed it saying it would hurt the federal structure of the country by intruding the domains of the state.
