NDDB approves 2 sub-projects for germplasm improvement

The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has approved two sub-projects costing Rs 59.89 crore for the improvement of germplasm of cow andbuffaloesin Haryana.
Under these projects, best quality bulls are being identified in the sate for providing quality germplasm regarding artificial insemination in different breeds of cows andbuffaloes.
Stating this here today, a spokesman of the Animal Husbandry and Dairying Department said NDDB has also approved two sub-projects for a period of five years for bulls (Hariana or Murrah) and to further strengthen the semen bank, Hisar.
The spokesman said that a sum of Rs 5.09 crore has been approved for rearing bulls through selection genealogy.
He said initially, this project has been implemented in three districts -- Bhiwani, Jhajjar and Hisar.
Apart from this, bulls of Murrah breed would be produced through theprogenytesting programme, he said.
This sub-project has been implemented in six districts -- Bhiwani, Jhajjar, Rohtak, Hisar, Jind and Sonipat for which an amount of Rs 24.72 crore has been approved, he added.
He said that the state government has constituted Gau Sewa Ayog for the preservation and welfare of cows in the state.
He said the Ayog has started the process for setting up of Gau Abhyaran (cow sanctuary) in Hisar and Panipat districts.
The total annual milk production in the state has reached 83.81 lakh tonnes, whereas the per capita milk availability has increased to 835 grams, he said.
The per capita milk availability at the national level is 309 grams.
With a view to encourage the farmers to rear cows of high yielding indigenous breeds like Hariana and Sahiwal, the farmers are being givenincentive ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 per cow on the basis of milkproduction, he said.
