No official figures of stray animals in Delhi is available, although the 19th Livestock Census, 2012, report puts the number at around 17 lakh in the national capital.
This figure doesn't include the number of monkeys which are categorized as wild animals.
As per the latest figures, a total of 2,760 cases of dog bites were reported by September 1. Twelve deaths due to rabies were also reported in Delhi in this period, officials said.
Till August this year, a total of 2,167 stray animals were caught and 2,094 street dogs were sterilised, they said.
In order to bring the street dog menace under control, the municipal corporation is also working on four sterilisation centres at Rohini, Timarpur, Piragarhi and Shraddhanand Marg, the officials said in reply to a short notice question asked by councilors Mukesh Goel and Prithvi Singh Rathore.
