North East Power Corporation (NEEPCO), a public sector undertaking, is on a drive to tap the region's full potential for power generation and hopes to raise output from 1130 MW of power per day to 2000 MW by next two years, a top functionary said today.
"It is our mission to increase power generation from 1130 MW to 2000 MW by next two years tapping the resources of the region and to make it power surplus", Chairman and Managing Director of NEEPCO, P C Pankaj told reporters.
NEEPCO is currently contributing 1,130 MW power including thermal and hydroelectric power across all states of the NE region.
A total of 927 MW installed capacity is currently under construction including 60 MW project in Mizoram, 5 MW solar power plant at Manarchak in Sipahijala district of Tripura, 600 MW plant at Kameing in Arunachal Pradesh and 52 MW extension project of the Agartala Gas Turbine Project (AGTP).
The NEEPCO signed an MoU with the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) yesterday to set up a joint venture company for upgradation of three power projects of the state.
The agreement of two premier public sector undertakings would add around 67 MW power to the existing generation capacity of Rukhia, Baramura and Gumti hydel power project in the state by the next 2 years, Pankaj said.
He said the 101 MW gas fired project at Monarchak was ready for generation and waiting for supply of gas from ONGC, which would be available by October end.
Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, who was present during signing of the MOU, said this is expected to deliver positive results in the days ahead.
Power Minister Manik Dey said the agreement would bring relief to the state since the department has been struggling to meet the power requirements due to steep rise in gas prices in September, 2010. The agreement would benefit the state by harnessing more power with the existing resources.
