A newborn girl, who was found partially buried in a pit in Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh, died in hospital today.
The infant was spotted on June 29 in such a position that her head was above the ground and the lower body underneath, near a cremation ground on the banks of Narmada river in Mandleshwar area, police said.
She was rescued after two passersby heard her crying and alerted police who rushed her to a nearby primary health centre (PHC) before shifting her to the state-run M Y Hospital in Indore, Rajesh Dandotia additional SP told PTI.
The girl died as efforts to revive her turned futile, he said.
Police suspect it to be the case of female infanticide.
A case has been registered in this regard and investigations are on, they said.
