The strike began at 10 pm last night.
"Condemning the shooting incident in which a Central Industrial Security Force jawan killed a former contract workman on March 17, 2014, the Joint Action Council of all the trade unions of the company has called for a one day token strike from 10 PM on March 17, 2014, to 10 PM on March 18, 2014," the company said in a filing to the BSE.
The company, however, did not provide any further details of the incident.
The state-run lignite miner has three opencast lignite mines of total capacity of 28.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) at Neyveli, Tamil Nadu, and one open cast lignite mine of capacity 2.1 MTPA at Barsingsar, Rajasthan.
It also has three thermal power stations with a total installed capacity of 2,490 mega watt (mw) at Neyveli and one thermal power station at Barsingsar, Rajasthan, with an installed capacity of 250 mw.
Shares of the company were trading at Rs 58.25 apiece, up 0.78 per cent on the BSE at around 1400 hours.
