The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today issued notices to district authorities of Ranchi in Jharkhand in connection with the death of a young student allegedly due to corporal punishment given to him by his school teacher.
Notices in this regard were issued to the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police (Ranchi), asking them to submit their reports within four weeks, police said.
The notices were issued after NHRC took suo motu cognizance of media reports that a Class I student of a government school at Chanho in Ranchi district died due to suspected internal injuries on February 2, five days after being allegedly beaten up by a school teacher with a piece of firewood, they said.
"Allegedly, despite complaints by some villagers to the Block Education Officer regarding corporal punishment, no action had been taken by the officer concerned against the teacher," an NHRC statement said.
Reportedly, the accused teacher, though suspended by the District Education Superintendent, is missing from his house since February 2.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the media reports, if true, amounts to serious violation of human rights.
