Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call to commute on cyle to work, officials of the government's IT institute NIELIT today took pledge of riding bicycle to work once in a week.
"Today NIELIT officials have pledged that they will ride bicycle to work once in a week. This is one of the great initiative taken under this ministry (MEITY). This will not only improve health of staff of NIELIT but also contribute to environment," Ministry of Electronics and IT Secretary Aruna Sundararajan said after flagging off the cycle ride.
Modi in his Mann Ki Baat program had urged that government official should commute on cyle to work at least once in a week to improve their health, which will result in better productivity.
National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT), under MEITY, has purchased 20 cycle as part of the initiative.
"NIELIT officials have opted to use cycle to work voluntarily. As per PM's wish, we have taken this initiative and expect other departments will too adopt it. We believe that PM's idea of cycle to work will become a movement," NIELIT Director General Ashwini Kumar Sharma said.
He said that cycle will be kept in stores of NIELIT and whosoever is willing can take it from there.
"From day 1 we are seeing excess demand for bicycle. However, there will be no leeway given to them for coming late to work or leaving early," Sharma said.
However, Sundararajan said that MEITY will further promote 'cycle to work' concept either through an award or incentive in some other form.
