Nifty hits over 5-month closing high; RIL stock rallies

NSE Nifty advanced for the fifth consecutive session led by buying in key front-line shares of energy, banking, auto and realty counters as positive global stocks boosted the sentiment.
RIL counter hit almost eight-year high in intraday trade.
The Nifty rose 19.05 points or 0.21 per cent to settle at 8,926.90, its highest closing level since 8 September 2016. The index gained 52.90 points or 0.59 per cent at the day's high of 8,960.75. The index fell 2.60 points or 0.03 per cent at the day's low of 8,905.25.
Overseas, European shares climbed supported by well-received earnings updates from companies such as Lloyds, Telefonica Deutschland and Scor.
Asian stocks edged up as investors cheered upbeat factory activity in Europe and solid earnings on Wall Street.
It saw an intra-day movement of about 55.50 points.
Major gainers were Reliance 10.96 per cent followed by Axis Bank 4.15 per cent, Idea 3.92 per cent, Asian Paints 2.90 per cent and Coal India 2.74 per cent.
While notable losers were NTPC 3.36 per cent, Ambuja Cement 2.43 per cent, Infy 2.31 per cent, Power Grid 2.21 per cent and TCS 2.18 per cent.
A total of 546 scrips advanced, 1,107 declined, while 59 remained unchanged. Total securities that hit their price bands were 90.
Turnover in cash segment rose to Rs 26,463.54 crore from Rs 22,346.46 crore.
A total of 12,416.77 lakh shares changed hands in 10,195,077 trades. The market capitalisation of NSE stood at Rs 11,557,387 crore.
