Reed, 25, and McDonald, 29, who have cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split, had not been living together since many months even though they were working in an album together, reported People magazine.
As per the obtained court documents, Reed is asking the court to not award her ex spousal support.
McDonald was a contestant on the 10th season of 'American Idol' in 2011 after which they announced their engagement in June preceded by a courtship period. The couple had tied the knot in October 2011 in Malibu.
