Nobody paid attention to constructing toilets, an important aspect connected to the health of women, before Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Madhya Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel today said.
"There is not a single field where women have not moved ahead in the last 25 years. There are many challenges before women but they are marching ahead by making a way out of the difficulties," she said.
She said that women have made considerable progress in the fields of social work, engineering, medicine and space.
"It has been many years since Independence, however, nobody paid attention to an aspect that is connected to the health of women. But our PM appealed to 125 crore people to build toilets," Patel said.
She added that women were now happy as they did not have to wait for darkness to go to defecate in the open.
Praising Modi, she said nobody had thought of solving the problem of women having to cook on wood-fired ovens, its smoke causing diseases like tuberculosis and cancer.
"Narendra bhai appealed to the people to give up gas subsides so that the money from it could be used for the poor who do not have cooking gas cylinders. Today more than 4 crore people have got gas connections," she said.
Patel was speaking at an award ceremony held here by the Wockhardt Foundation, in association with Divyaj Foundation and Lions Club International, to honour the country's women achievers.
