The National Rifle Association of India today ordered an inquiry into the incident involving detention of a coach-cum-manager attached with an Indian junior team for allegedly trying to smuggle in prohibited ammunition at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here.
Aharul Hassan Choudhury, who was returning from Finland after a junior shooting championships there, was yesterday detained at IGI by customs officials for trying to walk out through the green channel without declaring the ammunition.
"Mr. Raninder Singh, President of the National Rifle Association of India has taken a very serious view of this and ordered an enquiry into this matter. He has directed that stringent action must be taken against all - official or shooter, if found guilty," NRAI secretary Rajiv Bhatia said in a statement.
The NRAI also clarified that the official, who has been interrogated by the custom authorities for his alleged misconduct, is not part of the Commonwealth Games team.
The ammunition was confiscated by customs but the coach was let off later pending an inquiry.
As per rules, an individual with a license can carry a maximum of 50 rounds without paying duty. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has got a different rule and allows a maximum of 5 kgs of ammunition.
Sources alleged that Hasan was carrying hunting ammunition.
