The benchmark S&P CNX Nifty gained 10.25 points a day after plunging by a hefty 87 points on fresh global turmoil.

Trading began on a positive note on heavy buying in FMCG counters after a steller Q1 performance from HUL.

Weak numbers from IT giant Wipro kept technology counters under pressure, capping the gains. The key index saw range-bound trade throughout the session amid cautiousness due to lack of global support.

The lacklustre market turned choppy in mid afternoon and slipped into the negative zone for a brief period before regaining momentum on the back of bargain hunting in beaten down counters along with short-covering.

The 50-share Nifty hovered between a high of 5,144 and a low of 5,103.25 before closing at 5,128.20, a modest gain of 10.25 points, or 0.20 per cent, over the last close.

HUL, Ranbaxy, Sterlite Industries, Maruti, Sesa Goa, Bharti Airtel, Axis Bank, ACC, Gail and PowerGrid were the top percentage wise gainers from the Nifty pack.

Wipro, Sail, L&T, Kotak Bank, Sun Pharma, Asian Paint, Tata Power, M&M, IDFC and Infosys ended with gains.

The turnover in cash segment surged to Rs 8,621.12 crore against Rs 7,783.35 crore yesterday. In all, 5,508.46 lakh shares changed hands in 43,33,947 trades. Market capitalisation stood at Rs 59,18,596 crore.
