As many as 98.3 crore shares were traded on the National Stock Exchange amounting to a turnover of Rs 41,164.95 crore, a record high for a day, the bourse said.
The bourse's previous record stood at Rs 40,150.91 crore on May 19, 2009.
The high volumes in the cash segment come amid Japan's Daiichi Sankyo selling its entire stake of about 9 per cent in Indian drug major Sun Pharmaceutical for over Rs 20,420 crore.
In comparison to NSE, equity market turnover on the BSE today stood at Rs 4,021.67 crore with a total number of 86.86 crore shares traded.
