National Students' Union of India (NSUI) today launched a nationwide membership drive to strengthen the organisation.
"NSUI has launched a nationwide membership drive for the current academic year(2014-15). We looks forward to infuse new blood into the organization through this membership drive. We have so far enrolled 35 lakh members across the country in the last five years. We have also formed several teams in 15,000 colleges and elected 1.15 lakh officer bearers," NSUI national president Roji M John told reporters here.
"We are also happy that Congress has won bypolls in different states which shows that the youth of this country are coming towards Congress," he said.
John also said that NSUI will fight for the rights of students in all over the country and will fulfill its charter of demands.
Raising the issues of northeast students, John also said that incidents like eve-teasing, harassment, mockery of their lifestyles are an everyday occurance even in the so-called 'secure' environment of Delhi University.
"In the wake of the murder of Nido Tania, the then Congress-led UPA government had formed Bezbaruah Committee seeking a report on how to curb racial crimes. In July 2014, the committee submitted its final report to the Ministery of Home Affair. It has been more than a month and the BJP-led government has not even lifted a pen to implement recommendations," he added.
