Odisha to set up Referral Animal Disease Diagnostic lab

In a bid to bridge the infrastructure gap in livestock health care in the state, Odisha government has been planning to set up a state of the art Referral Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory and one GMP compatible viral vaccine laboratory near here.
This was stated by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik after inagurating a national seminar on "Livestock Health" organised by the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department.
Noting that in the present scenario most of the emerging infectious diseases in humans originated from either animals or birds, Patnaik said livestock disease control is of paramount importance from public health point of view.

"By preventing diseases in animals and birds, we can ensure optimal production level and a healthy society," Patnaik said adding that the state government has introduced Mobile Veterinary Units in all the Blocks.
The farmers of remote and inaccessible areas are getting veterinary services for their animals at their door-step, he pointed out.
Necessary skill up-gradation training is imparted to Livestock Inspectors to examine samples at their level, said agriculture, fisheries and animal resource development minister Pradeep Kumar Maharathy.

One Disease Diagnostic Laboratory is also being established in each district with required facilities, he added.
The DoFARD is also focusing on vaccination in and around Zoo, National Parks and Sanctuaries for creation of immune belts to check spread of infection and minimize the morbidity and mortality of animal diseases, he said.

The initiatives are taken by department to establish GMP compatible bacterial vaccine production laboratory at Bhubaneswar as this would help in production of quality vaccine in sufficient quantity to meet the State's requirement.
