Police today arrested one person in connection with the murder of a local leader of Bahujan Samaj Party and claimed to solved the case.
The arrested man has been identified as Robin Chouhan, a resident of Hapur district. Police said one Ompal Chauhan had hatched a plan to kill 40-year-old BSP's district secretary, identified as Amarpal Jatav.
Jatav was shot dead by five armed assailants in Loni area on February 15.
"Ompal had hatched a plan to murder the BSP leader as he was fighting a legal case against him in connection with a murder of his brother committed on January 18 this year. Ompal wanted to eliminate Jatav", said a senior police officer.
He said police got information that Robin was coming towards Sabhapur police post, laid a trap and managed to arrest him.
According to the officer, Robin told police that he, Ompal and his elder brother Brampal would work at a petrol pump in Dwarka of Delhi.
To kill the BSP leader, Ompal involved Robin and his three friends, who are still to be identified, in the plan.
"On February 15, Ompal, Robin and three other accused, who were on two bikes, intercepted Jatav's auto in Loni area when he was going to his house after attending a BSP function. Ompal pulled Jatav out of the auto and all five accused opened fire at him. Received seven bullets in his body," he said.
Police have launched a manhunt to arrest all four absconding accused, he also said.
