Cuttack DCP Sanjib Arora said Umesh was wanted in as many as 11 cases by different police stations of the city for his alleged involvement in tender fixing, extortion and supply of arms and ammunition and was an associate of dreaded mafia Dhalasamant brothers.
Arora further informed that Umesh was handled by hardcore criminal Bhajana alias Santosh Sahu of Chauliaganj to extort money from local shopkeepers, bus owners, and works contractors and from persons purchasing land or constructing new houses.
Meanwhile, sources said the city police have filed charge sheets in at least four more cases involving the Dhalasamant brothers at the local SDJM court. The police had earlier filed charge sheets in four cases.
A total of 21 cases have recently been registered against the mafia brothers and their associates.
