In a span of six days, the city today witnessed another organ donation and transplantation from a 59-year-old brain dead person, a state health department official said.
The donor, a resident of Chitpur area, was declared brain dead last evening and with the permission of the state Nodal office for organ transplantation, transplant specialists of the citys Apollo Gleneagles hospital retrieved one kidney and conducted the transplant in their facility in the wee hours.
The recipient, who is a 58-year-old resident of the citys Tangra area, was suffering from chronic kidney disease and on the transplant list.
The transplantation was successfully performed, a doctor said, adding that the operation was uneventful and the patient was under observation.
Meanwhile, the liver and the second kidney of the donor were harvested by the government-run SSKM hospital doctors late last night at the private hospital.
Both the organs were rushed to the SSKM hospital from the private hospital through a green corridor enabled by the Kolkata Police and those were transplanted in two patients, the official said.
One Mallika Majumder, hailed from Siliguri, who was declared brain-dead by the SSKM hospital on August 17 and her two kidneys and liver were transplanted on three recipients.
While recipient of one kidney at the SSKM hospital died on August 20, condition of other two recipients has been under observation, officials said.
