Parents get 5-yr sentence for abandoning newborn girl

A local court has awarded five years imprisonment each to the parents of a newborn girl whom they had abandoned a day after her birth.
Ambah tehsil's Additional Session Judge P C Gupta awarded the sentence yesterday on the basis of the statements of witnesses and evidence submitted by the prosecution.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 each on them.
Akshay Kachi and his wife Sunita were convicted for throwing away their newborn girl in an agricultural field on their way back home from government hospital, Khadiahar, on August 21, 2014, as the couple desired to have a male child, Additional Public Prosecutor Ramniwas Singh Tomar said.

When the villagers heard the wails of the child in the field, they informed the police about it.
The police later zeroed-in on Sunita after gathering information about the female children born in different hospitals of nearby areas.

Later when police questioned the couple, they admitted that they had thrown away their child as they wanted a boy instead of a girl.
The girl's parents later took her back with them.
However, the police arrested them by registering a case under IPC section 317 (exposure and abandonment of child under twelve years, by parent or person having care of it) and after the trial, the court found them guilty of the crime and sent them to jail.
