Addressing a function on the occasion, Governor Devenand Kunwar said the college was a 'light house of literacy' during the British period and had earned the reputation of being the 'brain capital' where students from across India and neighbouring Himalayan countries flocked to study.
Patna University Vice-chancellor Sambhu Nath Singh emphasised on redeeming the past glory of Patna College, and introducing subjects like econometrics, disaster management and informational technology in the institution.
Patna College principal Rash Bihari Singh said the institution was among the 10 oldest in the country.
Established in 1863, it was the alma mater of Sachidanand Sinha, the first president of the committee to formulate the country's constitution and noted Hindi litterateur Ramdhari Singh Dinkar.
Noted historian Yadunath Sarkar and former CBI director Trinath Mishra were also among its other well known students.
It was in this college that Loknayak Jaiprakash Narayan had first floated idea of 'Total revolution' when in 1974 he addressed a meeting of students in its precincts.
Former Chief Justice of Pujab and Haryana High Court B K Roy was among those who spoke at the function.
