Pattanam excavations finds place in SAF

Pattanam excavations, a multi-disciplinary excavations undertaken to establish the early historic urban site of Pattanam near Kochi, has found place in the recently concluded Shanghai Archaeological Forum at the Shangahi University in China.
Shanghai Archaeological Forum (SAF) is a biennial global initiative organised by the Chinese Institute of Archaeology and the Shanghai Municipality to promote investigation and protection of the world's archaeological resources and heritage.
The Pattanam excavations undertaken by Kerala Council for Historical Research (KCHR), was shortlisted as one of the top 20 field projects in the SAF from among 93 nominations from all over the world.
Prof P J Cherian, director of Pattanam excavations, spoke at the SAF recently on the methodology, finds and their global significance of Pattanam excavations, a KCHR release said here.

In his speech, he pointed out that during the second phase of urbanisation in human history, the silk, spice and aroma maritime routes propelled the transformation of Indian Ocean into a trade lake.
"The strategic global location of Indian subcontinent, the supportive role of monsoon winds in navigation and the natural resources of the region were crucial for Pattanam emerging as a leading port site," Cherian had said.
Advanced skills in metallurgy, cotton weaving and production of personal adornment items in gold, stones and glasses made Pattanam (Muziris) the 'first trade emporium' which was probably at par with today's Shanghai, London or New York, he pointed out.
