BJP today said it was the UPA government which had in the first place imposed a cap on subsidised domestic LPG cylinders and claimed that the people of the country would neither spare nor forgive it for the same even though it has now agreed to increase the number of such cylinders.
"Congress government wants people to cheer about their announcement of increasing the cap of subsidised LPG cylinders from nine to 12 per family per year.
"(But) people are in no mood to appreciate. They are instead asking a simple question, 'who brought in the cap of six cylinders in the first place?'
"The decision to cap LPG cylinders... Was an anti-people decision... People will not forgive the UPA government for this step as price rise has hit the common man hard," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said.
Centre today suspended the ambitious scheme to pay LPG subsidy in cash to consumers directly but raised the quota of subsidised cooking gas to 12 cylinders per household per year.
During the NDA regime, the price of subsidised LPG cylinders was Rs 244, now it is Rs 415 and people have to purchase each cylinder at open market prices as the much hyped Direct Benefit Transfer is yet to reach beneficiaries, Javadekar alleged.
Also slamming RBI for its move to hike interest rates, he said the decision would not bring down prices but prove to be counter-productive.
Attacking the government for the hike in interest rates, Javadekar said that UPA has not succeeded in addressing supply side issues and had thus failed to arrest inflation.
"This is the result of a bankruptcy of ideas on the part of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram in reviving the economy... It shows that the UPA government has proved to be a failure and that is why such anti-people measures," he said.
