Facinelli, 41, popped the question to the 31-year-old "Thor" actress on March 16, at the top of the Empire State Building, reported Us magazine.
The couple, who both appeared on "Nurse Jackie" and worked together on "Loosies", went public with their romance in November 2012, just eight months after Facinelli and his ex-wife Jennie Garth announced they were ending their 11-year-old marriage.
They finalised their divorce in June 2013.
"She knew it was coming but was overwhelmed during the proposal," a source said about Alexander.
