Vexed over the refusal of the authorities to consider construction of modern crematorium for years together, people in Palladam today approached the Madras High Court seeking direction to officials to grant permission to hold a novel demonstration in a temple highlighting their demand.
When the petition filed by one A Annadurai seeking a direction to the district administration to conduct a peaceful "padayatra" in this regard to Sri Masani Amman Temple, which was refused by the administration has come up, Justice M M Sundresh directed the authorities to afford permission subject conditions.
The villagers have the faith in the ritual of chilli paste, grinded at temple and stick it on 'Needhikkal' (justice stone) if their aspirations were fulfilled.
"This is a form of prayers the local villagers were following for ages to seek the intervention of the Goddess to fulfill their wish" said A. Annadurai, in the writ petition.
According to him, "after their wish fulfilled the villagers would return to the temple and pour gingelly oil over the stone as a mark of giving thanks to the Goddess".
The people were fighting for a modern crematorium in Palladam. As of now, the relatives were carrying the dead about 16 km long procession to reach two Tiruppur Corporation Electric Crematoriums.
On several occasions, dead bodies were returned for lack of time and space.
"As the authorities were dragging the matter for years bowing to the pressure of the politicians and they have decided to seek the intervention of Goddess", counsel for the petitioner Purushothaman said.
