A PIL was today filed in the Madras High court bench here seeking demolistion of the 'wall of untouchability' allegedly built to prevent movement of Dalits of a village in Tirunelveli district.
Petitioner A Indhira submitted that three members of a caste Hindu community had constructed a 300-foot wall on a public pathway, encroaching 30 cents of land, with the objective of preventing people moving between Soundaralingapuram, where about 200 Dalit families reside, and nearby Aavaraikulam where about 1,500 Nadar community families live.
The trio had constructed the wall, illegally encroaching the revenue land behind it, he submitted and alleged they tried to trigger a caste clash in the village. Their another object was to illegally take over 69 acres of land, he added.
Now, the wall was preventing access to the villagers to the pathway.
The petitioner said he had given representations to the Tirunelveli District Collector, Superintendent of Police, Revenue Divisional Office to demolish the wall but no action had been taken so far.
He sought a direction from the court to the officials to take action.
Justices S Manikumar and C T Selvam directed the government advocate to get instructions on the complaint and posted the case for hearing on March 21.
