PIL prays for creating awareness about POSCO

A PIL petition filed in the Madras High Court Bench here has sought to give wide publicity through media to create awareness about the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual offences Act (POSCO) 2012.
It also prayed the court to monitor the implementation of the provisions of the POSCO Act, objective of which was to protect child victims of sexual abuse.
Petitioner R Shankar Ganeshan submitted that as per the provisions of the act, the officers of the central and State government should be given training on the implementation of the Act.
The new legislation was enacted to overcome shortcomings of the Indian Penal Code provisions in dealing with child victims of sexual abuse.

However, the Police were not filing cases under the new act and continued to use the older provisions.
Justice M Jaichandran and Justice M Venugopal ordered notice returnable by four weeks to the Tamil Nadu Home Secretary, DGP and State Commission for Protection of Child Right.
