Plates, cups, saucers and some other items used by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel were today handed over by their custodian to Prime Minister Narendra Modi who described the first Home Minister as the true "architect of Modern India".
Modi paid rich tributes to Patel, who is popularly known as "Loh Purush" (Iron Man), on his 139th birth anniversary. He paid floral tribute at Patel's statue here at a crossing named after the late leader as also at his portrait in Parliament.
"Sardar Patel's life is a journey of deep-rooted courage, dedication & service to the Motherland. He is truly the architect of Modern India," the Prime Minister tweeted.
At his residence, personal belongings were presented to Modi by Sheila Ghatate of Delhi-based Manjiri Trust, a PMO statement said.
These items had been willed to Ghatate by Bipin Dahyabhai Patel, grandson of Sardar Patel, and his wife Lui, it said.
"Received some personal belongings of Sardar Patel. The items, include plates, cups and saucers etc used by Sardar Patel himself. These items are a unique part of India's heritage," Modi wrote on his facebook account.
He said appropriate arrangements would be made for their storage and preservation.
Modi also flagged off a 'run for unity' as part of tribute to Patel.
