Terming the comment as "inhuman, condemnable, and dangerous", PMK chief Dr S Ramadoss urged him to shun "irresponsible talk" and take constructive steps to solve the fishermen issue.
"Indo-Lanka fishermen issue is not an issue which can be solved at gun point," he said in a statement, urging the Centre "not to hesitate to do whatever is needed to rein in such leaders of the neighbouring country."
He had earlier expressed the same opinion in an interview to a Tamil news channel, days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the island nation.
Tamil Maanila Congress chief GK Vaasan said the opinion of Srilankan Prime Minister has created a sense of fear among fishermen.
Appealing to the State and Central governments, he said it should be conveyed to Sri Lanka categorically that fishermen should not be harmed.
