NDA ally PMK and Tamil Maanila Congress today condemned Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe for his remarks that his country had right to shoot anyone intruding into its waters and urged the Centre to take appropriate steps on the issue.
Terming the comment as "inhuman, condemnable, and dangerous", PMK chief Dr S Ramadoss urged him to shun "irresponsible talk" and take constructive steps to solve the fishermen issue.
"Indo-Lanka fishermen issue is not an issue which can be solved at gun point," he said in a statement, urging the Centre "not to hesitate to do whatever is needed to rein in such leaders of the neighbouring country."
Ranil had told an English television channel that, "Sri Lanka and India are working to resolve the fishermen's issue, but the country's navy has the right to shoot anyone who intrudes into their territorial waters."
He had earlier expressed the same opinion in an interview to a Tamil news channel, days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the island nation.
Tamil Maanila Congress chief GK Vaasan said the opinion of Srilankan Prime Minister has created a sense of fear among fishermen.
Appealing to the State and Central governments, he said it should be conveyed to Sri Lanka categorically that fishermen should not be harmed.
"The Lanka tour (outcome) of Prime Minister Modi is now a question mark at a time when fishermen were hoping for positive developments," he said and sought steps to ensure a hassle free environ for fishermen to carry on fishing.
