The city police arrested BTech student B N S Ram Kumar here today, for allegedly stealing laptops at Andhra University engineering hostel.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crimes) S Varada Raju told reporters that Ram Kumar, is a native of Tuni in East Godavari district who is pursuing his final year of engineering at Chaitanya Engineering College and staying at Madhurawada area, located at Kommadi on the outskirts of the city.
He said that Ram Kumar was habituated to a luxurious life for which he turned to theft and allegedly stole five laptops from three rooms since 2014.
Allegedly, Ram Kumar had sold two laptops in Tuni area to raise money for his luxurious habits, he said.
Since a majority of the students at Andhra University engineering hostel never locked their rooms and merely bolted it, stealing their laptops became easier, he said.
Ram Kumar has been a brilliant student since his school days but kept bad company and got addicted to luxury, which he had to finance by stealing laptops, he said.
After a series of complaints from Andhra University students about laptop thefts, the police registered a case and arrested Ram Kumar today, after which three laptops were seized from him, he said.
The accused has been sent to judicial custody, he said.
