Delhi Police have arrested the in-laws of doctor Ritu Bankoti, who had committed suicide at her home in east Delhi's IP Extension last week allegedly due to harassment over dowry demand.
"The in-laws of the deceased lady doctor, Ghanshyam Singh Bankoti (69) and Leena Bankoti (63), have been arrested. The custody of the 2-year-old child of the deceased will be decided by the court," Deputy Commissioner of Police (east) Rishi Pal said.
While Bankoti's husband was arrested last week itself, her in-laws were arrested last night, police said, adding that the woman's minor daughter was at present living with her maternal grand parents.
The 30-year-old doctor, who worked at the Anaesthesia department of AIIMS, had taken the extreme step at her flat in Kurmanchal Apartment of IP Extension, by injecting herself with some lethal substance on September 15, with her family alleging that she was being harassed by her in-laws for dowry.
On the basis of the statement of her family members, police had registered a case under IPC section 304(B)(dowry death) at Madhu Vihar Police station.
Bankoti was married to Brajesh, who works as a pilot in an airline, three years ago and the two were allegedly having strained relations. Their neighbours have told the police that the couple would fight frequently over domestic issues.
Bankoti's family members have alleged that her in-laws used to demand dowry which constantly worried her, police said.
