A 16-year-old girl died on the spot after being knocked down by a speeding truck at Barama this morning following which angry locals blocked the highway.
The police tried to persuade the protesters to lift the blockade but they turned violent. They pelted stones injuring two policemen and set ablaze a truck and an excavator.
The police then fired in the air and the crowd began to disperse though tension continued to prevail in the area, the spokesperson said.
The victim girl has been identified as Deepshikha Medhi, a class X student of a local school.
