Police's U-turn on Namrata case; no review ordered

Making a U-turn in the Namrata Damor case related to the Vyapam scam, a senior police officer today said the investigation was complete and no review had been ordered in the matter.
"No review was ordered in the case as investigation is complete and the report has been submitted. No question of any review arises," Ujjain range Inspector General of Police (IGP) V Madhu Kumar told reporters here.
"If a court or any other agency says then only a case can be reopened. Police had submitted its report only after doing complete investigation and it has no doubts over it," Kumar said.

However, earlier in the day Ujjain district Superintendent of Police Manohar Singh Varma had said, "We have ordered a review of the death of Namrata Damor. Sub- Divisional Officer of Police, Tarana, R K Sharma will reopen the case."
Namrata's case came back into focus following the sudden death of TV journalist Akshay Singh in Jhabua district's Meghnagar town recently after he had interviewed Namrata's father.
Namrata's body was found near the railway tracks on January 7, 2012 in the district. Police first registered a murder case, but later termed it an accident and closed it.

Namrata was studying at the Government MGM Medical College in Indore, and it was suspected that she had got the admission through the racket which rigged the Pre-Medical Test conducted by the Vyapam (Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board).

Her autopsy report, dated January 9, 2012, had said it was a "homicidal" death caused by "violent asphyxia as a result of smothering".
The report was signed by Dr B B Purohit, Dr O P Gupta and Dr Anita Joshi. Dr Purohit told PTI that "the panel of doctors that conducted the post-mortem (PM) has never mentioned in their short PM report as well as the detailed PM report that it was a case of suicide. We also found nail injuries at three places on her face."
When the body was brought for postmortem, at that time it was unidentified, Dr Purohit said.
