30-year-old man who allegedly masqueraded as a monk and cheated some people here of gold ornaments weighing 13 sovereigns and Rs 23,000 in cash over the past 20 days.
Police said the man was wandering about in Nakkiyampatty village and had cheated seven families promising them that they would get huge amounts of gold if their jewellery were worn by him. He had even stayed in their houses, police said.
After collecting the jewellery and cash, he told them yesterday if he went around the village in a two-wheeler, it would be benefited. But he never returned following which the villagers lodged a complaint, police said.
