Postmaster booked for embezzlement

A postmaster in Gurdaspur district of Punjab has been booked for alleged embezzlement of more than Rs 32 lakh, police said today.
Batala SSP Opinderjit Singh Dhillon said senior superintendent of post offices in Gurdaspur, Gopi Chand Goel, lodged a complaint that postmaster Lakhbir Singh, posted at Sri Hargobindpur town here, allegedly misappropriated several lakh of rupees belonging to small saving account holders.
Acting on the complaint, Batala (city) DSP Sucha Singh conducted a probe and miss appropriation of funds worth Rs 32,46,500, he said.
A case under relevant sections of the IPC has been registered against the postmaster, who is currently absconding.
