President Pranab Mukherjee today appreciated the West Bengal Government's initiative to expand and improve technical education through polytechnics and said it was a right step to empower the youth with updated technology.
More and more young men and women would be equipped for employment through such polytechnics, the President said after inaugurating a new building of a girl's college here.
Calling upon the teachers to take more responsibility for spreading education, Mukherjee said women's education was imperative for the development of the society.
Recalling the past glory of Murshidabad which was once the capital of Bengal, the President said he was happy that efforts were now being made to revive some of its lost distinctions.
West Bengal Speaker Biman Banerjee, Education Minister Partha Chatterjee and the President's son and Congress MP Abhijit Mukherjee were present on the occasion.
After the function, the President left for Baharampur, headquarters of Murshidabad district, for other engagements.
The President will return to Kolkata tomorrow and felicitate a group of industry leaders at the formal inauguration of the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) at Shibpur in Howrah district.
