Condemning the recent attack on a Sikh Professor in the United States, Akal Takht head priest Gurbachan Singh urged the Centre to take effective steps to prevent such assaults on members of the community abroad.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who himself is a Sikh, should understand the concerns of the community, he told media persons here.
The Prime Minister should direct the External Affairs Ministry to ask the US government to take stringent steps to prevent such attacks, the Akal Takht Jathedar said.
Terming the attack on the Professor as inhuman, the head priest said "the Sikh community, including SGPC, has been making efforts to create awareness all over the world about look and appearance of the Sikhs."
After 9/11, there had been racial attacks against the Sikhs which were condemnable and must be stopped, he said.
