Party legislator and Deputy Speaker in Legislative Assembly Bandana Kumari said the protesting volunteers were unhappy over the selection of the candidate.
"The candidate has not worked in the area. However, she was associated with the party's central team and has worked in the constituency during the Lok Sabha polls. The volunteers wanted the party to nominate someone from within them for the bypoll," Kumari said.
Sources said the protesters were close to Kumari but the Shalimar Bagh MLA rejected the charge.
Mittal is one of the 13 candidates the party has announced for the MCD bypolls.
