The Principal of the Government Degree College in Pulwama in Kashmir was today removed from his post by the state government which also ordered a probe into the violence that took place on the campus last Saturday and triggered student protests across the Valley.
Abdul Hameed Sheikh, the principal of the college, was removed from his post and his charge was handed over to a senior faculty member, Education Department officials said.
The government also ordered an inquiry into last Saturday's violence, involving stone-pelting by the students on the security forces which had entered the college premises, the officials said.
Dozens of students were injured in the retaliatory action by the security forces during the incident, which triggered student protests in other parts of Kashmir valley.
As a result, the higher educational institutions in Kashmir have been shut by the government for the last three days and will remain closed tomorrow also.
The inquiry will be conducted by Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan, the officials said.
Several videos have gone viral, purportedly showing the security forces personnel thrashing the students and forcing them to shout abuses at Pakistan.
In one of the videos, the college principal is seen confronting the security forces as they were entering the premises of the educational institution.
He is seen shouting at the security personnel, telling them to kill him before entering the college premises.
