Pune needs an "efficient" police chief, says NCP

Opposition NCP today objected to the transfer of Nagpur Commissioner of Police K K Pathak in the same capacity to Pune, saying the city, which witnessed a series of serious crimes, including murder of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar, needed a "younger and efficient" officer to handle law and order.
Reacting to perception that deteriorating crime situation in Nagpur prompted Maharashtra Government to shift Pathak in a high-level police reshuffle, NCP spokesman Ankush Kakde told reporters that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis should have taken into account the rising crime rate in Pune before transferring him here.
"The murder of rationalist Dabholkar in broad daylight (in August 2013) is still unsolved," he added.

Pathak succeeds Satish Chandra Mathur, who has been promoted and transferred as Director General (legal and technical).
Echoing similar sentiments, Vivek Velankar of Sajag Nagrik Manch, a citizen's forum, said the people in the city were "concerned" over Pathak's posting in Pune, where the law and order situation left much to be desired.
Pune has been on the terrorist radar since the German Bakery blast in 2010 which killed 17 people and injured over 50, followed by a low-intensity serial explosions on the arterial J M Road on August 1, 2012.
