Raids at shops selling spurious items

The Punjab government's campaign against adulterated food items continued today, with a food-safety team raiding two shops in Ludhiana and seizing spurious soya paneer.

Being sold at Rs 200 per kg, the soya paneer did not have any date of manufacturing and expiry. Besides, the batch number and address of the manufacturer were also missing on the packets, an official said. The team seized 70 kg of cheese, 40 packets of soya paneer and 20 kg of soya 'chaap'.

The Ludhiana food safety team also intercepted a vehicle coming from Sangrur town, having 1,050 litres of milk. Milk vendors have admitted having added hydrogen peroxide to it, the official said.

In another raid in Bathinda, 315 kg of paneer and 150 kg of skimmed milk powder was seized by the food safety team. Some samples have been sent for analysis, he said.

In Patiala, 1,200 litres of milk, along with glucose powder, empty tins of refined oil, were found from a shop. In Fazilka, huge quantities of ghee was seized from a shop, he added.
