Rains lash UP, several rivers in spate

South-west monsoon remained active in Uttar Pradesh as rains lashed many parts of the state after a brief lull, even as major rivers including Ganga, Ghaghra, Yamuna, Sharda and Rapti continued to remain in spate.
According to a Central Water Commission report, Ganga was flowing above danger mark in Ballia, Ghazipur, Phaphamau and Chatnag (both in Allahabad).
In Ballia, the river was flowing two metres above the danger mark.
Yamuna was flowing above red mark in Kalpi, Hamirpur, Chillaghat and Naini, while the level of Bhudi Rapti was above danger mark at Kakrahi.
Sharda river was flowing above danger mark at Paliakalan in Lakhimpur and Ghaghra river was above the red mark at Elgin Bridge.
According to the MeT department south-west monsoon has been active over east UP and vigorous over western parts of the state.
Moderate to heavy rain or thundershowers occurred at many places over the state with very heavy rains at isolated places over west UP.
Nazibabad received 140 mm rains, followed by Rath 130 mm, Moradabad 110 mm, Bareilly 90 mm, Bansgaon, Hardoi, Mirzapur, Swar, Pawayan, Kasganj and Aonla 70 mm each, Azamgarh, Karchana and Turtipar 60 mm each.
A MeT department forecast said heavy rains would occur at isolated places in the state during the next 48 hours.
