'Raising ques over woman's character may lead her to end life'

Regular uttering of words raising question over a woman's character would lead her to end her life, a Delhi court has said while sending a man to over three years in jail for harassing and abeting his wife's suicide.
The court said though the 25-year-old man was not at home when his wife committed suicide by hanging herself, uttering of words and quarreling over her character has led the woman to take the extreme step.
"If we analyze the evidence, it has been established that accused was quarrelsome with the deceased by using these words... Though accused was not even at home, yet uttering these words as well as quarreling over character of deceased has led her to commit suicide.

"It is direct abetment and incitement which left no option to the deceased but to commit suicide. Regular uttering of these words will naturally lead any woman to such an extent that she ends her life. In fact, deceased did so in this case," Additional Sessions Judge Atul Kumar Garg said.
The court held the man, a resident of Sadar Bazar here, guilty of causing harassment to his wife and abetting her suicide under the IPC and sentenced him to three years and three months in jail.
While awarding the sentence, the court said though the man was not found in the room, it has been affirmed by complainant that it was the convict, who used to demand dowry and used to taunt continuously about the character of the victim.

According to the prosecution, the woman was found hanging her matrimonial house in June 2012 while her room was locked from inside and her two kids were having food there.

The woman's brother told the police that she had got married to the man in 2009 and they have two children. He said the man used to quarrel with the victim saying he would marry her off to somebody else and also repeatedly raised questions over her character.
He told the court that soon after the victim's marriage, her husband started demanding several articles from them.
During the trial, the man claimed innocence and alleged that he was falsely implicated in the case.
