"He had fever recently owing to infection in chest and urinary tract. A team of specialist doctors is monitoring his condition which is now critical," Mission Secretary Swami Suhitananda said in a statement.
The Swami has been undergoing treatment for complications related to old age for the last one year at the same facility.
Swami Atmasthananda was elected 15th President of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission in 2007.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who considers the Swami as his 'guru', had on April 17 met him in the hospital.
