In a unique way of encouraging weight loss among its obese population, the cash-rich Dubai municipality is inviting residents to trade in their love handles for gold.
The civic agency in wealthy Gulf city-state announced yesterday the launch of its unusual weight loss programme, "Your Weight in Gold," a 30-day weight loss challenge that will run from July 19 to August 16.
All registered participants of the slimming initiative have to lose a minimum of two kilogrammes to win gold, and will receive one gramme of gold in return for every kilo lost, 'Gulfnews.Com' reported.

Additionally, the first three winners will be eligible to win a coin worth Dirham 20,000 (USD 5,445) through a lucky draw.
"We carry out a number of health initiatives every year to benefit the community, and this year's event aims to encourage adults and children to lose weight and be healthy," said Nasser Lootah, director general of Dubai Municipality.
Top winners will be those who lose the most weight during the programme, and the first three winners will be eligible to win a gold coin through a lucky draw.
The weight of each participant will be measured on both the date of registration and on the final day of the programme, however, Lootah pointed out that "participants can register any day during the month".
