A 72-year-old retired DTC employee was allegedly strangled to death by his tenant and an accomplice at his residence in north-east Delhi's Mansarovar Park area, police said.
According to police, the deceased has been identified as one Ratan Singh and the incident took place last evening when he was alone at home.
Police said they suspect that Singh's tenant, one Manoj Kumar, was involved in the crime as he was seen with another person in the footage of a CCTV camera installed outside the victim's house. The duo is on the run since the incident was reported, they added.
"The deceased person's tenant, Manoj Kumar, is seen in the CCTV footage fleeing the house with his friend; they are seen carrying some robbed items. Entry inside the house, which was found ransacked, seems to have been friendly," said a senior police official.
The murder came to light at around 10.30 P.M. Last night when the victim's daughter-in-law returned home. She raised an alarm and their neighbours made a PCR call. The victim was rushed to the nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.
There were marks on the victim's neck and arms suggesting that he was strangled to death, police said.
Retired Delhi Transport Corporation employee Singh used to live with his wife and son and daughter-in-law at the house. His son had gone to Gwalior for medical treatment while his wife was visiting Hathras to attend a marriage function.
A case of murder has been registered at MS Park police station.
"We have been trying to call Manoj Kumar on his cellphone, but it is switched off. Efforts are on to nab him," added police.
