Monu, Vishal and Pankaj were on their way to a Janmashtami event when the accident occurred on Thursday night, police said.
The speeding truck hit their bike which in turn hit a rickshaw ahead of them and two of the boys fell on the road sustaining grievous injuries, they said.
Their friends Amar and Akash chased the truck driver and caught him. A PCR call was made and the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.
"They were not only triple riding but were also not wearing helmets," said the officer.
The rickshaw puller, Sukhari, also sustained minor injuries in the accident and was given first aid at the hospital.
The boys lived in Prem Nagar I in west Delhi. Monu worked at a pizza outlet while the other boys were students.
The accused driver, Manoj, a native of Alwar in Rajasthan, has been booked and arrested, added the officer.
